Case Studies

These are very brief summaries of the types of garden we work in

Phlox and Verbena

Planting

Mrs P's mature garden in Surrey where one of the beds had become overrun with comfrey and geraniums.

This is an area of the garden seen from both the house and the outdoor seating area so it had to connect with both and it had to look good all summer long as they do a lot of entertaining.

The client was clear that they wanted a cottage garden feel to the area and they would like a range of foliage types and flowers in pinks, blues and purples.

A quick trip to the nursery and several days digging later we had the bones of the garden and by the middle of July the garden looked really established.

Pruning

For a garden to look its best the plants have to fit into their spaces and not be crowding other shrubs or shading out the planting.

In the busy lives that we lead it can be difficult to find the time to undertake the regular pruning needed to keep a shrub in good shape, but once the shrubs get out of shape then the structure which holds a garden together in winter is lost.

We made regular visits over the course of a year to prune and reshape shrubs just after they had flowered or as they became dormant depending on best practice.

Repurposing

Ms C's garden had beautiful roses and a couple of large shrubs, but the floor of the flowerbed had disappeared.

A meeting with the garden owner established that what was needed was low maintenance, drought resistant planting with a preference for plants that would tie into the existing colour scheme of pink, creams and yellow. Lavenders, aquilegias and plants with purple/blue spikes were a favourite.

The garden was north facing so the main flowerbed was planted with shade tolerant plants as it would sit in the house’s shadow for most of the day.

What our customer said

I just want to say a huge thank you to Susan who has made my garden into a fairy paradise with a wonderful selection of plants and flowers!

The whole process was so enjoyable! Susan devised a plan as to which plants would achieve the kind of garden I had in mind.

We then had a fun trip to the nursery where I got to see all the flowers on the plan – and got to choose a few more!

Then I chose to join Susan planting and in the end we had a wonderful creation that just keeps on giving!!

Thank you Susan so much for giving me such a delightful garden to enjoy!
